Although the solution has a very low pH, it is still very “neutral” meaning it can be handled safely like water.

What are PILS (Protic ionic liquids)

PILs are a class of ionic liquids that are unusually rich in protons that are readily available for hydrogen bonding.

In that respect, PILs are similar to widely used strong industrial acids, such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid.

However, PILs have unique physicochemical properties that allow them to be incorporated into formulations that can make their handling safer and more environmentally sustainable than traditional industrial acid formulations having a similar pH.

HioniQ’s proprietary PIL, HEZion, is an inorganic, proton rich aqueous liquid that is stable and non-volatile at STP, is only weakly exothermic when it contacts water, and is weakly corrosive with carbon based steels.

Hezion-containing formulations have been developed for specific uses in both the petrochemical and agricultural industries, and as a low barrier proton donating reagent for lowering pH in almost any setting.
